Good Knight Lucky

By Chris Lafond

Rebecca ran as fast as her four paws could carry her. She had a huge smile on her face as she passed through the fog that surrounded Devil Ville. Rebecca's soft blue eyes shimmered as she rejoiced in her accomplishment.

Rebecca was finally able to defeat Dimsdale Devil once and for all. Freeing the village from the curse that kept it moving through time.

Rebecca looked back to see that the fog was slowly starting to lift from the village. Up ahead, a pink mist began to form in the roadway. As Rebecca drew closer, she could see a dark shadow in the center of the pink cloud. Rebecca skidded to a stop as the cloud cleared. Almost running into the Witch who put the spell on Devil Ville.

"Well done dear. I knew you could do it." The Witch said.

"You were watching the whole time?" Rebecca asked in her thick Irish accent.

"Yes, I wouldn't miss that for the world. That Dimsdale really got what was coming to him."

Just then the chicken that was in the Witch's arms jumped into the air, clucking and screeching.

"Yes Katrina you are right. We should tell her immediately." The Witch exclaimed.

"There is another problem that needs your attention. In the magical cave of the many clucks, which is just beyond the forest. Rests the mystical Sky Scepter. An evil chicken named Spotnella is trying to retrieve the Sky Scepter. If she succeeds, she will have the power to rule the world. You must stop her dear." the Witch said.

"I will surly try." Rebecca said, her head held high.

Katrina franticly clucked some more. "Oh, I almost forgot!" The Witch gasped.

Katrina jumped to the Witch's pointed hat. The Witch lifted her hands above her head. Thick, dark clouds circled the sky above them. Thunder rolled and blue lightning flashed. Rebecca looked up to the sky as the Witch spoke her incantation.

"Flames of lovers and tears a new. From up above the heavens brew, and gives a gift from me to you."

A bolt of lightning flashed down to the Witch's hands. As the brilliant light faded away, Rebecca saw a blue collar in the Witch's hands.

"This magical collar will help you stop Spotnella." The Witch removed Rebecca's old pink collar, and placed the magical collar around her neck. A sparkling sapphire tear-dropped shaped pendant hung from the front of the collar.

"Now you must be on your way dear." The Witch said.

Rebecca quickly ran along the dirt road toward the forest.

For what seemed like hours, Rebecca crawled through the tall green brush of the forest. Finally, with an exhausted sigh, Rebecca broke through the brush.

Rebecca found herself in a small open field. Up ahead, the field rose gracefully up into a hill. As Rebecca approached the hill, she noticed a cave was sliced into the side of the hill.

This must be the Cave of the Many Clucks. Rebecca thought, as she made her way inside.

Rebecca crept through the cool, dark, cave. The ground felt moist and spongy under her paws. The tight passageway quickly opened up into a large cavern. In the center of the cavern was a large golden alter. Laying on top of the alter was a golden scepter. Affixed to the top of the scepter was a sapphire sphere.

That must be the Sky Scepter. Rebecca thought as she jumped onto the alter. Rebecca bent down to take the scepter in her teeth, then froze.

"Well it looks like the Lass had found the scepter for us." The man said to the chicken sitting on his shoulder.

As the man walked towards the altar, Rebecca growled then leapt into the air. The man put his hand out and caught Rebecca by the collar. Rebecca growled and pawed at him, trying to get free. The man did not notice the chicken had left his shoulder till it was too late.

A blue beam of light struck the man in the chest. He dropped to his knees. His eyes were fixed straight ahead.

Rebecca glanced toward the altar. The chicken stood on the altar. The sky scepter held carefully in her wings.

"You must be Spotnella. You won't get away with this, I'll stop you." Rebecca said, her blue eyes filled with contempt.

Spotnella laughed. It sounded like a strangled cackle.

"We'll see about that." Then she turned to the man, "Take her to the castle. We'll deal with her there."

"Yes my master." The man said.

Rebecca sat in the cold, dark, dungeon cell. She could not believe that Spotnella had won. If only I had been faster. Rebecca thought, then I would have the scepter, not Spotnella. There must be a way to stop her.

Rebecca found herself thinking back over the past couple of days. It hadn't been that long since Lucky, Rolly, Cadpig, and Spot had freed her from that old curse.

Rebecca remembered running along side Lucky toward the jail to free their pets, Roger and Anita.

In their last moments together, Lucky had asked Rebecca to come with him. Rebecca had refused, 'you have to protect your world, and I have to protect mine.' Rebecca said to him. Then as the fog started closing in around her, Rebecca fought back tears and said, 'Hurry, there isn't much time.'

"Oh I wish Lucky was here." Rebecca said as she slumped to the ground, "He would know what to do."

The tears flowed down Rebecca's cheeks, like miniature rivers. Her ears drooped down, almost touching the ground. In her despair, Rebecca didn't see that her pendent was glowing with an eerie light.

The day started out like any other on the Dearly Farm. The darkness of night slowly gave way to the soft pink of morning. Lucky was the first one up as always. He watched as the pink sky turned a deeper red. Lucky was soon joined at the open barn door by Cadpig.

"I wonder what adventures are in store for us today." Lucky said.

"Let's check the affirmation calendar." Cadpig said, "Hmmm, let's see here. Today's affirmation is: Squeeze the juice out of all who oppose you. Whoops, that was yesterday's. Today's is: You will discover a blast from the past."

"What does that mean?" Lucky asked.

"I don't know, but it sure sounds good." Cadpig said with a smile.

Off in the distance, a cow bell rang out. A spotted white blur shot past Lucky and Cadpig, knocking both to the ground.

"Rolly can sure move fast when food's involved." Cadpig said as she picked herself up.

Lucky and Cadpig made it to the food trough. But not before Rolly and the 97 other puppies. I hope they save us some. Lucky thought, as he pushed his way into the spotted mess.

Breakfast was over as quickly as it began. Lucky found Rolly asleep out behind the barn.

"Wake up Rolly. We're going down to Hiccup Hole for a swim." Lucky said.

Rolly rolled onto his side. "Ok Luck, I'll see ya after lunch." Rolly said.

Lucky shook his head in disgust, but expected as much. He quickly ran down the dirt driveway toward Hiccup Hole.

Cadpig and Spot were already waiting for Lucky at Hiccup Hole. "Where's Rolly?" Asked Spot.

"He said he'd meet us here after lunch," Lucky said, "but I'm not waiting that long."

Lucky began climbing his favorite tree. He cautiously eased out onto the third branch. The clear blue water below look so refreshing.

"Yahoo!" Lucky cried as he jumped off the branch.

Lucky dove under the surface with a loud splash. Quickly he came to the surface. "You guys have to try this!" It's so cool!" Lucky exclaimed.

Lucky cleared the water from his eyes. "Guys? Cadpig…Spot? Where are you?" Lucky called out, but there was no reply.

That's strange, Lucky thought, where did they go? Not only that. Why is it dark all of the sudden?

Lucky looked up to see the sky dominated by thick black clouds. Lucky swam over to the shore. Shaking off, Lucky turned back toward the pond. A gasp filled Lucky's throat as he looked straight across to the other side of the pond. The tree he just jumped from wasn't there.

Lucky heard a noise behind him. He spun around to see a man coming toward him. It wouldn't be a strange sight, even out here except the man wore long black clothes. And dangling from his right hip was a shiny sword. I don't think I'm in Grutely anymore. Lucky thought.

"Well look at you. Come here little puppy." The man said.

Before Lucky could run or bark, the man grabbed him by the collar and tossed him into a cloth sack. Lucky clawed and squirmed, but couldn't get free.

Lucky was stuck in the sack for what seemed like forever. Finally, the sack was turned upside down, and Lucky fell out in a heap.

"Another Dalmatian. Hopefully no more surprises." A familiar voice said.

Lucky opened his eyes. Sitting on a golden throne was what looked like Spot. In her feathered hand was a golden scepter with a bright blue gem housed at the top. Around her shoulders flowed a white cape, spotted with black dots. Lucky didn't even want to ask where it came from.

"Spot, what's going on?" Lucky asked.

"My name is Spotnella. Soon you will call me master." She said

"What are you talking about?" Lucky asked.

Spotnella addressed the man. "Guard, throw him in the dungeon with the other."

The guard obediently snatched up Lucky. They descended a steep staircase. The way was lit by a torch the guard held in his other hand. At the bottom of the stairs was a large cave chipped out of the stone wall. The guard quickly tossed Lucky into the cave. Lucky tumbled across the floor, smashing into the far wall of the cave. There was a loud thud as a large iron gate crashed down from the ceiling.

Lucky was still dazed from his roll across the floor. Not to mention covered in dust and dirt. He continued to lay on the floor. Only half aware of something moving toward him. Lucky heard a soft whisper in his ear. "Are you alright?" The accented voice asked.

Lucky felt a cold, wet, nose nudge him. He knew it was another dog, a female puppy. Then Lucky felt a soft tongue lick the back of his neck. Slowly the puppy moved down Lucky's back, then slightly to the side. She started licking one of the black spots that made up Lucky's horseshoe pattern.

Lucky smiled. Oh no! That's the. . . Before Lucky could finish his thought, he broke out laughing.

"Stop! That tickles!" Lucky managed to get out as he rolled away.

"Sorry." The puppy said.

In the half light, Lucky could see the white fur of another Dalmatian puppy. She had two heart shaped spots on her front legs. A pink heart shaped spot sat on her left cheek. The puppy's light blue eyes shined with surprise and happiness.

"Who are you?" Lucky asked.

"You do not remember Lucky? I'll help you remember." The puppy said in a soft Irish voice.

Lucky watched as the puppy closed her eyes. Her eyebrows scrunched down, her pink nose twitched as she concentrated. Lucky noticed the pendant on her collar started to glow. Suddenly images flashed through Lucky's mind.

Lucky was running beside this Dalmatian. He could sense that Rolly, Cadpig, and Spot were with him too. He felt there was some urgency, they needed to. . .to save Roger and Anita from. . .Dimsdale Devil.

"Rebecca?" Lucky asked.

"Yes Lucky, it's me." Rebecca said as she opened her eyes.

"What. . .what are you doing here? I thought I would never see you again." Lucky said, filled with excitement.

"I was captured by Spotnella. She has taken control of the human's minds. I tried to stop her but I was too late." Rebecca said.

"She plans to take over the world."

A sheepish grin grew on Lucky as he said "well we're not gonna let that happen Rebecca. I have a plan."

"What are we gonna do Lucky?" Rebecca asked.

"We're gonna take matters into our own paws." Lucky said, flicking his eyebrows.

It didn't take long for Lucky and Rebecca to dig their way to the other side of the gate. Lucky heard footsteps echoing down the stone stairwell.

"Stay right here." Lucky said.

Lucky ran over to the far wall. Quickly he jumped up on a small ledge. The guard came into view. As Lucky guessed, the guard didn't see him.

"How did you get out missy?" The guard asked.

With a growl, lucky leaped off the ledge. He landed on the ground, then jumped back into the air. Lucky did a somersault in mid air, catching the seat of the guard's pants with his teeth. Pressing against the guard's leg, Lucky tore off a sizable chunk of his pants. "Yow!" the guard cried.

Rebecca charged at the guard. At the last moment, she jumped up, throwing her full weight on the guard's chest. The guard tumbled to the ground.

"Ya! Works every time!" Lucky exclaimed.

"Where did you learn that?" Rebecca asked.

"I learned it from Thunderbolt." Lucky said, smiling at the thought of his all time hero. Rebecca shot him a curious look.

"I'll tell you about it later." Lucky shrugged.

"What are we gonna do with him?" Rebecca asked.

"I'm glad you asked." Lucky said, that sheepish grin returning.

"Oh come on, let me out!" the guard begged.

Lucky and Rebecca looked back at the guard. The only part of him visible was his small round head. The rest of him was buried under as much dirt as Lucky and Rebecca could pack around him.

Rebecca followed Lucky up the cold stone stairwell. Both still silently laughing. Lucky poked his head out of the doorway.

The coast was clear, nothing but a dark hallway. Lucky walked out of the doorway, motioning for Rebecca to follow. The two Dalmatians walked side by side down the darkened corridor. Slowly, an archway loomed into view. The small corridor opened into a colossal room. Torches lined the walls. As Lucky squinted in the torch light, he saw yellowish flickers along the wall.

"Gold! Riches!" Lucky exclaimed, his eyes bugging out.

"Snap out of it." Rebecca said, nudging him.

Rebecca looked around the room and saw a window cut into the stone wall. Rebecca jumped onto the windowsill. She looked out and saw Spotnella and a small group of humans leaving the castle.

"Hey you!" a voice called from the doorway. Both Lucky and Rebecca turned to see another guard coming towards them.

Lucky jumped up onto the sill and look down. The mote was a long way down, but under the circumstances it was better than staying here.

"Jump!" Lucky yelled.

Before Rebecca could say your nuts, Lucky had jumped out the window. She watched Lucky splash down in the mote.

Rebecca sighed, "If only he wasn't so cute." Rebecca closed her eyes and jumped.

The next thing Rebecca knew she was under water.

"You ok?" asked Lucky

"I think so." Rebecca said, climbing out of the water.

"I know where they're going. There’s some old druid ruins not far from here. I bet that’s where they’re going. To start the ceremony." Rebecca said.

"Know any short cuts?" Lucky asked.

"Follow me."

Rebecca and Lucky walked through the forest till they came to a river. The riverbank ended in brush a few yards down river, but the other side was clear. "We have to cross." Rebecca said.

Lucky spotted a trail of rocks in the water. He jumped across the rocks to the other side. Rebecca followed. She was doing pretty good, till she slipped on the last rock.

Lucky heard the splash.

"Rebecca!" Lucky yelled, watching as the current carried her down stream.

Lucky dove in. He quickly reached Rebecca. He grabbed her collar in his teeth and pulled her to a nearby log. Together, they held on to the log as the rapids twisted and turned them.

Finally they were through the rapids. Lucky looked into Rebecca's soft blue eyes.

"Well, that wasn't so bad." Lucky said.

Rebecca was about to agree when she heard the roar.

"You just had to open your big mouth, didn't you!" Rebecca yelled as they went over the falls.

Lucky woke up dazed. No bones were broken. With a sigh Lucky got up. He looked back across the water. In the distance Lucky could see the waterfall. Where is Rebecca? Lucky thought.

Lucky looked around the shore line. "Rebecca!" Lucky called, but got no answer. Lucky saw the tall grass rustle.

"I'm coming Rebecca!" Lucky called.

Lucky stuck his head through the bushes. Rebecca was tied helplessly to a log. She strained against the ropes but couldn't break free. Don't worry Rebecca, I'm coming. Lucky thought. Just then Lucky heard a voice yell "Got ya!" Lucky turned and looked up, but it was too late. One of Spotnella’s goons grabbed Lucky.

Lucky was unceremoniously tied to a log next to Rebecca. "Well, now that I have both of you. I can start the ceremony." Spotnella said.

"You'll never get away with this." Lucky said.

"Well we'll see." Spotnella said.

Spotnella bent down and picked up two feathers from the ground. She turned to two of her guards.

"Here, finish them off." Spotnella said, handing the feathers to the guards. Spotnella stalked off toward the rock formation. "I don't like the looks of this." Rebecca said, watching the feathers get closer.

"You have nothing to worry about Rebecca, not with the Luckybolt here."

Lucky flicked his head. His bright red collar soared above his head. Lucky caught it in his teeth. With a quick snap, Lucky let the collar fly.

The collar whizzed through the air. It swung around, knocking the feathers from the guards hand's. Then it returned to Lucky.

Lucky pulled a small object out of the collar. A sticker on the side of the object read: Mini Thunderbolt, Super-Spy Pocket Knife. Lucky opened the knife and cut both him and Rebecca loose.

"I know you guys are a lot of laughs, but we have to go!" Lucky called as he followed Rebecca down the path.

They crested a small hill. Massive chunks of gray stone were scattered about. A couple of stone pillars still stood in place. In the center of the ruins was Spotnella.

"I'll take care of Spotnella, you get the scepter." Lucky said.

Lucky charged down towards Spotnella. He yelled "dog pile!" as he jumped into the air. Spotnella turned just before Lucky smashed into her.

Rebecca grabbed the Sky Scepter while Lucky and Spotnella wrestled on the ground. Rebecca saw the two guards come over the hill. Through clenched teeth, Rebecca said, "to those under this chicken's spell, return to what you once knew.

A beam of blue light arced out from the scepter. It struck the two guards before her, then continued off for the castle.

"NO!" Cried Spotnella from underneath Lucky.

"It's over Spotnella." Rebecca said.

The two men approached Lucky and Rebecca. "Hey," One of them said, "isn't that the famous Sky Scepter?"

"Give it here doggy." The other man said.

Rebecca looked at Lucky, who groaned "not again." They both ran as fast as they could, leaving the men and Spotnella behind.

Eventually, Lucky and Rebecca broke through the brush to stand before a small pond which looked vaguely familiar.

"Hey," Lucky said, "I think this is Hiccup Hole, or what will be Hiccup Hole."

Rebecca dropped the Sky Scepter on the ground. "We have to get rid of this." She said.

Lucky picked up the scepter, and tossed it into the center of the pond. Rebecca closed her eyes and said "to protect the world, and save my sanity, let strong roots shield this scepter."

Rebecca opened her eyes and watched an ominous looking tree grow out of the pond.

"It's the tree!" Lucky exclaimed, "Well that's that!" Lucky smiled at Rebecca.

Rebecca's soft blue eyes had grown sad. Lucky could see them fighting back tears. "What's wrong?" Lucky asked.

"You have to go now." Rebecca choked.

"What do you mean?" Lucky asked. "I don't want to leave you."

"It has to be this way, you have to go back to your time."

"But I can't, I. . .I love you Rebecca." Lucky stumbled, his eyes beginning to fill up too.

Rebecca moved closer to Lucky. She laid her head on Lucky's shoulder. "I love you too Lucky."

"Come back with me Rebecca." Lucky pleaded.

"I wish I could." Rebecca whispered in his ear. She used her front paw to scoop Lucky's paws out from under him. "I cannot." Rebecca said as she pushed Lucky into the pond. Lucky fell back into the water. Swallowed up in the cold darkness.

"There he is!" Rolly called, jumping into Hiccup Hole. He grabbed hold of Lucky's collar, and pulled him to shore. Spot and Cadpig rushed over to Rolly and Lucky.

"Is he o-o-ok!" Spot asked.

"I don't know. I'm not picking up any life energy." Cadpig said.

Lucky opened his eyes. "Rebecca?" Lucky whispered. The image before him shifted into focus.

"No silly, it's me!" Cheered Cadpig. "You almost drowned in Hiccup Hole."

"No I was. . ." Lucky paused when he heard a splash in the water.

Lucky turned his head in time to see a Dalmatian shake off. A pink heart shaped spot on her cheek. "Rebecca!" Lucky exclaimed. Rebecca walked up to Lucky, Rolly, Cadpig, and Spot. "I changed my mind." She said as she laid her head on Lucky.

"Cool!" Lucky exclaimed.

"Who's this Rebecca?" Rolly asked.

"It's a long. . ." Lucky started to smile, suddenly aware of what Rebecca was doing. "No. . .not the ticklish spot!" Lucky giggled. But Rebecca didn't stop this time.
