TRUSSELL
Trussell, also recorded as Trussel, was the surname of an ancient Norman Family. The name derives from the old French 'Troussel' which means a "fardle, bundle or bunch". It may have been originally used as a nickname for a hunch back.
The first known Trussell in England came with William the Conqueror from Normandy and took part in the battle of Hastings in 1066. The name is listed in the roll of Battle Abbey. This was "a memorial" erected about seven miles distances from Hastings., in fulfillment of a vow made by the Conqueror prior to the battle which won for him the diadem of England.
The Trussell's were of knightly rank from their first establishment in England. The most distinguished of the name was the famous William Trussell. You can read more about Sir William Trussell from Britannia.com.
The first Trussell we can document coming to America from England is John Trussell. In 1622 he came to Virginia aboard the ship Southhampton. His passage paid by Capt. Thomas Paulett, along with 37 others. Capt. Paulette and his brother received a patent of 2000 acres in Charles City County on 15 January 1637. The muster rolls of settlers of Virginia listed: Mr. Thomas Rowlett's muster: Thomas Rowlett (*Paulette), age 40 years, in the Neptune, in August 1618. Servant John Trussell, aged 19 years, in the Southampton, 1622. For the purpose of this site I will not be addressing this John Trussell as no proof at this time links him as an ancestor of James Madison Trussell, but for those interested in John Trussell the immigrant and his son John Jr. who married Elizabeth Chinn plenty of information does exist in the internet by other researchers. I will refer you to the links below:

OUR TRUSSELL'S
Our Trussell descendants are quite lucky that one ancestor had the foresight to document some of the family history "Thinking it might be interesting to my children and posterity". Also these descendants are very lucky that many old family documents and letters have been preserved and protected from the years. There is quite a large collection of these historical family documents located at University of Texas at Arlington. This site will try and demonstrate the family line of James Madison Trussell through his writings, family records, census records and other documentation available.
