How do an Eagle Scout and a Missionary who
worked under Mother Theresa end up in prison for kidnapping their own children?
On July 31, 2000 the Oregon Services to Children and
Families seized the three daughters of
Brian and Ruth Christine, a college-educated couple traveling across America
with their girls, after an anonymous caller said that one of the girls
"looked dehydrated". Days later, Ruth Christine gave birth to a
baby girl named Olivia, and secretly transported the newborn to Brian's mother in Indiana. A
few days after that, police, armed with sub-machine guns raided the Christine's
motor home at dawn to seize the newborn. Finding no baby, an infuriated SCF
ordered the couple to produce Olivia, which they refused. Oregon SCF
battled in the Indiana courts for over a year seeking custody of this baby, but
the Indiana judge refused to uproot the little girl, and granted custody to
Brian's mother. In retaliation, Oregon SFC
wouldn't allow the Christines visitation with their daughters and stalled
custody hearings.

July, 2001 An SCF spokesperson, speaking to a newspaper reporter doing a feature on child abuse, announced that the state was moving to terminate the Christine's parental rights, in spite of the fact that Brian and Ruth, a year later, had never been tried on any charges, and in spite of the fact that Oregon SCF had failed to provide any medical evidence to support their claims. They had been allowed two visits with their daughters in the twelve months they were in state care. On August 1, 2001, a year and a day after the girls were first taken from their homes, Brian and a pregnant Ruth were allowed a third visitation. When the visit was over, Brian Christine followed the SCF van and allegedly took the children back at gunpoint when the SCF worker stopped at a rest stop. He and his family fled to Montana, where they were captured a few days later. |

Brian and Ruth Christine were jailed in Montana, Brian in Billings and Ruth in Missoula. During this time Ruth gave birth to a baby girl, Abbey Rose, after spending her labor shackled and handcuffed to a hospital bed, an act of outrageous cruelty. She was returned to jail a few hours later, and the newborn Abbey Rose was put in the custody of Montana Social Services, while the state of Oregon fought in the Montana courts for custody of Abbey Rose, too. Oregon lost that battle, and this baby, too, was given to the grandmother in Indiana. Brian and Ruth Christine were extradited back to Oregon, where they were convicted of robbery and sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison, with an additional 60 months for Brian, for using a gun during the rescue. Their family has been torn apart for all time now. The three oldest daughters were adopted by Ruth's parents in England, and when Ruth completes her prison sentence she will be deported to England, never being allowed to return to the states to see Brian or her two daughters. Brian, as a convicted felon, will never be allowed to go to England to see his wife or his other three daughters. |

| The Christines will be represented in Oregon pro-bono (for free) by Idaho attorney Ed Steele, but there are a lot of expenses involved with this defense. The more resources available, the more effective attorney Steele will be at exposing the corruption of the Oregon SCF. Please send a contribution. | ||||
