You have to look at it in
digital terms not real life physical matter. Digital media can be
digitally Compressed to as much as 2% of its file size and still
keep full functionality, the average compression of an ebook is at
least 70%+ so in physical terms it's like taking a small box (say 2'
foot x 2' foot x 2' foot) and forcing over 200 full size teddy
bears to fit in it, (air in the teddy bear represents redundant data
that can be removed without destroying the file/teddy
bear) only digitally you can pull out one teddy bear at a time
(quickly thanx to digital indexing) and the rest stay
compressed (smashed in the box with all the air pushed out) while
you're looking at the current one you pulled out. Digital media makes
the impossible physically, possible digitally, leading the way for a
huge conglomerate of information to fit on one 700 meg CD rom!
another example/metaphor is a picture.
Take a real life picture and record it digitally. The real life
picture weighs what 10 grams
and the digital format is
weightless, compressible to 2% of its size and physically you
can fit more pictures in the same space digitally than physically. A
CD can hold (700 megs that is) over 10,000 pictures. Have you ever
tried to fit 10,000 pictures into a space as small and thin as a CD?
Even 1'' by 1'' x 10,000 is physically impossible (without destroying
the picture that is) where as on CD rom its possible due to digital
re-sampling and compression technology. I like to think of digital
information versus Physical (books paper etc) information as the same
difference as a physical person versus a ghost. all the information
is there but holds no actual physical space or weight yet is capable
of much more in the same space.
