Questions and answers come from The Handy History Answer Book edited by Rebecca Nelson

1. History began when man began to document events in writing. Before that is called PreHistory. Man began to write about 5, 500 years ago.

2. Sir Edmund Hillary was the first to make it to the top on May 29, 1953. He was British. The more difficult Eastern Face of Mt. Everest was not climbed until 1983. It is still very difficult to make it to the top of Mt. Everest.

3. It's almost true. Edison went to a school for a short time early in his life. Mostly his parents taught him at home. He read lots of books and taught himself most of what he knew.

4. Stephen G. Wozniak and Steven Jobs are given credit for the first computer. They started Apple Computers in 1976. The first computers were expensive and didn't do very much compared to the ones we have today.

5. It's been around a long time. It is not something new to our time. In 1343 bubonic plague was used by the Tartars in an attack on their enemy. They threw the dead bodies of people who had died from the disease into the midst of their enemies, causing the disease to spread there. In 1925 the Geneva Convention was signed by many countries saying they would not use this kind of weapon. Today it a concern as some countries are again creating and threatening to use biological weapons.
