Rams Lose to Refs
October 15th, 2006
Make no mistake about it, the Rams played one hell of a game and ended their red zone woes. They were 4 of 4 in the red zone. So it can't be said that they don't know how to execute down in the red zone any longer. They should have won this game, but it's a hard thing to do when the refs take it upon themselves to re-invent the rules.
I'm not making excuses for the Rams, I'm speaking bold facts here. The ruling that Hochuli gave everyone during the closing seconds of the game, was pure fiction! It was an interpretation of a rule that has been standing for a long time and his explanation for why the game was not over, isn't even listed in the exceptions to the rule.
I personally took it upon myself to review the rules on my own to see if I could make sense out of his decision. But alas I couldn't. According to the official rules of the NFL, in all rights the Rams should have won the game. The rules state that if at the end of a game (4 seconds left is pretty much the end of a game) there is an offensive penalty, the down cannot be replayed and the foul nullifies that play, end of game...Rams win. But wait a minute that is not what Hochuli said. He gave us some long winded non-sensical answer as to why the Seahawks were still entitled to those final 4 seconds and the Seahawks bring in Brown for the winning field goal.
They say the NFL will probably review this, but what does it matter? What good will it do? It's not like they'll give us the win by taking it away from the Seahawks. So what, they're going to find that Hochuli was wrong and they're going to tell the Rams "We're sorry, he screwed up, can you forgive us?" The damage is done.
In the meantime, you got the Seahawks, their fans and the talking heads saying they're the better team all because some ref decides to pull out some phantom loop hole and change not only a rule that's as plain as the nose on your face but also just hand the game to the Seahawks.
Am I angry, you bet I am. The Rams deserved that win more than any win so far this year but it was stolen by Mr. Ed Hochuli and the Seachickens. It broke my heart to see that team work as hard as they did, especially Bulger and Holt, and to have it yanked out from under them in such a manner is just criminal.
And now once again the little "Darlings" of the NFC West are struting around like they're the hottest thing since sliced bread (as my grandmother use to say) all because they got lucky. That's right, luck this time was on their side.
hope the Rams will take this bitter game with them up to Seattle, remember how it was stolen from them and use that anger and energy to show Seattle they're not as good as they think they are.
The Rams need to take this game and use it as motivation to make them angry, and I mean angry, they need to play the rest of the season with a chip on their shoulders!
Just a note, there were two penalties by the way, one was for illegal formation which can't end the game and the other was a false start, which can end the game. And why didn't Hochuli give the false start? Explanation "Oh, I assummed that he was going to spike the ball anyway." Excuse me? What does that have to do with it. Had he given them that penalty it wouldn't have mattered if he spiked it or not, that would have instituted the ruling that the game was over. Good one Ed.
GO RAMS!
