AutoBacklight for HP iPaq 4150 and 4155

HP iPaq 415x is a great Pocket PC, but its backlight control system doesn't support backlight brightness change automatically when connected to (or disconnected from) AC power (charging). Most of the other HP iPaq PPCs have this feature though.

This AutoBacklight utility solves the problem. It will set the backlight brightness to the highest when a 415x is connected to the charger (and charging). The backlight brightness will turn to normal (the default setting) automatically when charger is disconnected.

AutoBacklight is a very small program which takes less than 8kb memory. It works for HP iPaq 415x PPC only. There is no UI or whatsoever. Just run AutoBacklight once to enable it. Run again to disable it (if you choose to).

Installation and user guide:
1. Download the AutoBacklight zip file, copy the cab file to your PPC then install (with any file explorer)
Note: two shortcuts will be created automatically. One is under \Windows\Start Menu\Programs, the other is under \\Windows\StartUp (to enable AutoBacklight after a reset).
2. Run AutoBacklight (by clicking on any of the above shortcuts). Now if your PPC is charging, the screen backlight will turn to full brightness (in a couple of seconds).
3. To disable auto backlight, just run AutoBacklight again and confirm the action (click on the "Yes" button). The backlight brighness will be turned to normal when AutoBacklight is disabled.
4. Uninstall: you'll have to disable AutoBacklight before you can uninstall it.

AutoBacklight is FREE.

DigitizerCheck for Pocket PC

DigitizerCheck is a simple utility for a Pocket PC to check its screen alignment. If your screen is out of alignment, you can use the "File->Align Screen" menu item directly launch the built-in screen alignment (DigitizerCheck will be automatically closed when the built-in one starts up).

Just tap anywhere on the screen, its location will be shown on the screen. You can tap and drag the stylus and check the alignment too. DigitizerCheck only checks the screen's alignment. It doesn't calibrate the screen. But DigitizerCheck has a menu item to help you directly launch the built-in screen alignment utility.

DigitizerCheck can help you to check if your PPC's screen has any dead pixel. From the Menu->Check Dead Pixel menu item, you'll see a pure BLACK and then WHITE (tap the screen to change) screen. This can help you to check the dead pixels (if there is any).

DigitizerCheck should work on Pocket PC with an ARM (including XScale), MIPS, SH3 or SH4 CPU. It only takes about 11kb memory space. It should support any screen size (320x240 or 640x480) and direction (portrait or landscape). It hasn't been fully tested on a PDA with VGA screen, but you can have a try.

Installation Guide:

Note: All Windows Mobile 2003 (and SE) PPCs are using XScale CPUs, so just choose the DigitizerCheck.cab (2002/2003 for PPC2002/2003/SE version) file to install if you have a PocketPC 2003 PDA.

Simply copy the proper cab file to your PPC and install it with any file explorer.  A shortcut (DigitizerCheck.lnk) will be created automatically under:

/Windows/Start Menu/Programs

BatteryTime (Today Plugin) for Pocket PC

BatteryTime is a small Today Screen plugin which monitors battery's uptime since last charge and displays the current battery charge percentage on PPC's Today Screen.

There is no option or whatsoever. Just install and your battery will be monitored. When the PPC is connected to a charger, the uptime will be reset to zero. The uptime will start count whenever the charger is disconnected.

If you also want to monitor your PPC's memory status, you can try BatteryTimePlus, another free plugin which is not only monitor battery usage, but also display current memory status.

Tap or tap&hold on BatteryTime (on Today Screen) will display a popup menu which allows a user to choose from:

Because each Pocket PC has its own hardware control, Backlight Brighness and Power Control might not work on some PPCs. Based on my own testing, Backlight Brighness setting works on both iPaq 2210 and 4150. Power Control works on most PPCs but doesn't work on iPaq 2210 (don't know why).

It'll be very appreciated if you could try these menu items on your PPC and send me the feedback about these two items. Many thanks.

BatteryTime should work on all PPCs with ARM (including XScale) CPUs, Pocket PC OS 2002 and up. It only takes 11KB memory.
