1.11.04-5.4.04

5.4.04- Hey everyone.. today was pretty normal. I went to go mow the lawn and skied down the lawn from the moisture... no more mowing the lawn till it dries up. Tonight I'm going out to Halls with Mr. Lajeunesse and a bunch of other people from my astronomy class to observe some stars, hehe. That'll be friggin sweet. I should probably print out some charts or something like that so that I can get a better idea of what's going on. Binoculars are good, too. Uh... not much else going on right now, so I guess I'll catch you guys sometime later.

5.1.04- Yeah.. I know.. it's been a while. So I'll fill you in on all the cool stuff that's been going on. Ok, Prom. Prom was incredible. I got pictures and stuff I'm going to put up as soon as I get them developed/scanned, and I have to finish off the camera. I also got this pic from HBOA too, me in a tux... w00t. Also, Sarah and I have gotten back together, and it is turning out really well.. I think it was a great idea. Um... what else.. Oh yeah. The concert went really well, and I think we came together great. The car wash was fun today, hehe... except for random people spraying me at the end... that was kind of annoying, since I had to get back in the truck and what not. But we did really well.. overall we got $1,296 (Sams and profit). Speaking of money, my dad has made a DVD of the Jazz Coffee house concert... it's really awesome. Sign up for a copy in the band room on the bulletin board; $7.50 each, and all money goes towards the band boosters. Well, I figured this update would be really long.. but I guess not. Things are going pretty well, and I'm finally beginning to... OH YEAH! I applied for jobs at the mall.. and I might be able to get a job at The Rush.. which means a FREE MEMBERSHIP! That would also mean free rock climbing for me.. I think I'm really getting into the whole rock climbing thing. I went twice, and on the second visit, I had people that were watching me ask me,"So where do you normally go to rock climb?" and I'm like... uh... this is like my second time. It's so much fun though. I can't wait to go again.. haha, I wanna go rock climbing right now. I also have a good chance of getting this job because my friend's dad is the manager, and I talked to him and he talked to him.. and he said,"Yeah, we could probably get you some work here." Hehe.. I'm excited. Summer is peering around the corner, and all my troubles are fading away. Yay. One bummer though... Mr. Jackson won't let us go see the DCI thing in the theatres :-(. I was really looking forward to that. But, I still may be able to get to Murfreesboro or something like that, since I'll have a job.. and money. Yay for that. Ok, that's why this update was going to be long. I can't wait for Summer to come around (it deserves capitalization, hehe). It's going to be the coolest summer yet, and I'm going to work out and get tan and practice trombone all the time and work and play... EEE!! I really needed this whole summer thing. Wow.. in 14 days, I am a Senior in High School. A Senior in High School... wow. I remember when I was 7 and used to think that I'd never be a Senior. And it's here. And college is right after. Wow.

Life goes fast.

4.23.04- So I found out something incredibly awesome today... DCI (Drum Corps International) Quarterfinals are airing LIVE at the Regal Cinemas theatres out at West Towne on August 5th from 5:00 till about 10:30. It's going to be INCREDIBLE... that is, if we can go. We GOTTA get Mr. Jackson to let us out early or something like that, that day of band camp. Better yet, I think we should all go to see it as a band or something like that.. that would kick some major butt. We would have to get tickets ASAP though.. people are most likely starting to get them already, hehe. They're 15 bucks a piece if we get them now. BUG JACKSON TO LET US GO!! Lol. It would be so awesome if we could. That would be a really cool memory to have, too. Haha, we could be all loud in the theatres and scream and stuff just as if we were in Denver watching the real thing. I sure would. Shew.. I really really really really really.... you get my point. Oh yeah.. prom is tomorrow.

4.21.04- Ugh... Monday sucked really bad... Tuesday was half suck/half awesome... today was good. Hopefully a pattern arises out of this.. insanity sucks. I got fired from Youth Orchestra for not being able to make it to rehearsal. Don seems to be a bit more understanding.. he told me that we should "probably hold off on lessons until you can get things together for yourself"... but it wasn't bad at all. He also said,"You're sounding better and better every day.. you've got the skills, you just gotta be able to operate." So at least that's not as much of a bummer as it could be. I still have music going for me.. thank god. Other problems arose today which I care not to discuss on my blog... I'm so sick of problems. Problems, problems, problems, problems. Oh yeah, but there are some good things going on.. I seem to be pulling myself together a lot better, and the Jazz Band was awesome on Jazz Night. A big thank you to everyone who helped with that.. it was so much fun. And saxes... you nailed the solos on the combo.. I was like, "Damn, those are our saxes???"... shew... Well, I'm off of here.. I'll catch everyone else later.

P.S. I fixed "O Magnum Mysterium" on my Mp3s page.. CHECK IT OUT. It's awesome. Also, I updated old blogs... it now goes up through Christmas of last year.

4.18.04- Today's the last day of 42nd St. ... finally, ugh.. I'm so glad it's almost over. I just want to get it over with. They're all like 3 hours long, and the rehearsals were 8 together... so you take 3°4 and add it to 8.. that's 20 hours. For 100 dollars.... 5 bucks an hour. Hehe, usually it's a lot easier than that, like with Central Baptist.. I get paid like 20 an hour, hehe. Well, enough discussing the musician life.. I might be doing the Walkin' solo on the Jazz Night concert.. by the way, if you guys haven't heard about it, Jazz Night is going to be AWESOME, and you guys should definitely come to it. It's Tuesday, 4/20 (yeah I know... ironic, isn't it?) at 7:00 PM in the band room. We set everything up yesterday, and it was just awesome. The lighting is incredible, and you guys have yet to see the stage. Anyway, I'm out... see you guys. 4.16.04- Sppbbbtt... I've been staying up late for the past 4 days trying to get homework done after having to stay afterschool for 42nd street rehearsals, and have been working on some more J.J. Johnson solos. I can't wait for the lesson on Monday.. I feel so prepared and ready to seriously amaze Don. Hehe. Well, the only thing I have to complain about is the whole girl situation *sigh*. I still REALLY want to be with someone.. but I don't want to be with Sarah since it didn't work out.. and things just wouldn't be the same. The relationship just wasn't going anywhere, you know? And we're two different people. I just don't feel the same. I want to enjoy the single life... it's just that it's so hard to do when there's no one to enjoy it with.. *sigh*. I realized today just how little time we have left at school.. I want to make some great memories. Ok... now I'm sad. I'm going to turn on some sad music and just... chill for a while.

I wonder if anybody has ever felt this before. Have you ever known someone for a very long time and gradually realized that they are like you in EVERY little aspect? Have you ever grown unbelieveably attached to that person, but have been forced to push your every loving emotion back and back and back into a small little corner of your mind, a corner packed with emotion so tight as to be denser than a neutron star? Have you ever wanted, at EVERY single moment, to just stop pushing and pushing and pushing and let that emotion flow throughout your soul and let that person experience just how much love you can absolutely muster...but have been forced back?

....I have.... and it is so, so difficult to do something so unnatural.

4.12.04- Geez.. I keep on thinking I updated the page.. but I didn't, lol. So I guess I'll do that now. Not much has been going on the past few days *sigh*.. I wish there was more time to hang out. Things have been going well, I guess. I got some speakers for my computer that came with a subwoofer.. oh my god. I put the subwoofer in my desk drawer, and now when I listen to loud music, it rattles like a car. The house does the same thing when I turn it up all the way, haha. But it is really sweet. I did a gig for Central Baptist on Easter, and got $75, plus I've got another one coming up for my school which'll probably pay about $100. Yay for hard-earned money. Well, I feel like I'm going to fall asleep or something.. I've got a lesson coming up at 5:00 and Youth Symphony at 6:30. I'll see you all later!

4.3.04- Hmm.. I'm going to work on the site for a little bit... add all my old blogs, and some info about me.. I guess I'll put some internet quizzes up and some those random e-mail surveys I'm always getting.. probably more use on here than sending it out to everyone just to get erased, hehe. Nothing much new on my end... I guess I'll see you all later.

4.1.04- Whoa.... I just found something out that made like.. all my problems go away... I feel... unbelieveably great. Wow. Lol, and I'm not on drugs... I just feel.... really really good. :-)

4.1.04- Ugh... I feel like fucking shit today. FUCK EVERYTHING. fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. FUCK! Figures.. that word is so useless once you think about it. Think about it over and over in your head.. then it becomes letters.. and you start comparing it to other words. Pretty soon, you realize that it doesn't do anything much good, and is useless for expression. Ughhhhhh.... well, I found a nifty little site today... called Iraqometer.com ... all the statistics of the "war" efforts. Using simple math, I calculated the probability of my father being killed or wounded... 1/40. Check the math for yourself... wounded/number in Iraq, converted into a fraction. *sigh*.......*sigh*. I wish people would just give me a break every once in a while. *sigh*... Fuck.

3.29.04- Every year I have one day where the sudden realization of school being almost out and summer peaking it's head in the window hits me.. yesterday was that day. I went into my room, turned up music, opened the window and turned on the fan... and it was fun. I should do that more often. Oh yeah, I also got an organizer, haha... I've been needing one of those for a while. Everything's getting so much easier now, finally. And I'm so glad summer is a mere 2 months away.. I can't wait. And this year, I'm going to be in town the entire summer! Speaking of... a few days ago was the first anniversary of this site.. I can't believe I've had it for a whole year already. Seems like just yesterday I was floating around dreaming about Deanna and having odd breakdowns and such... and now I'm floating around.. and having odd breakdowns. Deanna can bite me for all I care, lol. Hmm... my computer just flickered. Weird. Well, that's all for today. Knoxville Youth Jazz concert on Wednesday at UT Alumni Memorial Hall. Maybe I should make a schedule of upcoming events so I can bring you guys into the exciting life of Shaun Kahler :-P. See you all later.

And if you guys haven't been yet, Madeline Kulpa (Madeline is waaay cooler than Maddie, hehe) has a website and a blog and a bunch of other random things floating around on the net. Check out the blog at http://www.livejournal.com/users/maddiek/... she updates way more than I do.

3.22.04- Quote of the day- Harry Anslinger,"...and I don't mean good musicians.. I mean jazz musicians." Hehe.. gotta love history. Anyway, I went job hunting today.. went to about 10 local places before submitting four applications- Arby's, Walgreen's, Shoneys, and Blockbuster. Hopefully, I can get one at Shoneys. Haha.. used Don Hough, Mr. J, and Erin Kimble as references. Well, who else would I use? Seriously... but uh.. sPrInG bReAk RoOlZ! MwUhAhAhAhAhAhA!

3.21.04- 9:54 PM: hmm.. I'm going to start a huge room-cleaning project.

Yep.

3.18.04- Today was Concert Band Festival... we kicked some serious ass. The concert band got 2 II's (II=excellent) and 2 I's (I=superior).. for an overall I rating.. but get this... the Wind Ensemble AND the Symphonic Band both recieved straight I's across the board. That is the first time ever that two grade VI bands have gotten straight superior ratings.. and now, next year the Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Band are going to Nashville during All-State! By the way, for anyone that has never done an All-State type thing.... it is absolutely amazing. You guys are going to just LOVE it. Basically, we get to perform for the best bands and teachers from all across the state of Tennessee. Hehe... sounds scary, but you guys are going to have an awesome time. Also.. a good reason to practice.. so you can get good over the summer and be in the top band next year. Man.. I'm so tired.. I just had a little hyper/happy boost for the past 10 minutes.. but it's gone now. Looks like I'm going to bed. Well, I'll see you all tomorrow.

Link of the day: EricWhitacre.com-Beautiful music. An absolute must listen.

P.S. I'm very proud of all of you in the Central High School Band... we pulled off some amazing things today. Don't ever let that die.. and remember.. for all the bad days we've had... we came out with this.

3.14.04- Happy Pi Day!!! Ask me to recite the first 80 digits of Pi, and I shall do so... or just give you a goofy look and walk away. Depends on how I feel tomorrow. Anyway, All-State was fantastic; I'm definitely picking All-State Jazz over All-State Band next year. We played some awesome music. The band repetoire this year was quite boring, though. Glad I didn't mess with it. Anyway, I'm back in Knoxville now, and I'm finally settling down after a sheer two months of craziness going on.. what's funny is that my "settling down" is equivalent to lots of other people's "getting really busy". Festival is this week, and we're going to do so well.. I just know it. It's going to be great. I'm so proud to be in our band now, it just seems like everyone is so into it now. *sniff* I love you guys! *sniff*. Man... I REALLY MISS SARAH! Haha, I didn't realize it until today, and it just hit me, lol. Hopefully she doesn't get the wrong idea that I couldn't get a hold of her for a while. Anywho, I've got to practice a little bit.. see you all later!

3.9.04-

Which VW Are You?
by Auto Glass America

See you guys on Monday.. I'm going to All-State for the rest of the week. Screw everything that's not music. :-D

3.8.04- And once again, I'm happy to be done. I just finished 7 hours on studying for an Astronomy test, which I will get a C on at the very highest. It's all about the average grades mixed with the automatic 100's you get for completing certain assignments. Anyway, I leave to All-State in 2 days, I'm doing the jazz band and I'm really excited. Should be tons of fun. Speaking of, I'm also doing a gig for the KJO.. can you believe that? 16 and playing for the KJO.. I ought to write that in my resume.. oh yeah, resume update time, hehe. Check it out. I also just got back from Carson Newman to play in- yeah, you guessed it- an Honor Band. And in May, I'll be playing for-once again- another honor band, for Jazz. I can't wait. I really gotta concentrate, though.. I'm starting to slack off in practicing.. but it's only because I literally CANNOT! Time is such an essential thing now.. I am so glad I'm getting the hold of that idea now, so when I go to college I will be used to not having free time and making use of the free time I have. Tomorrow I get to practice though. Fun stuff. Well, I will be leaving you guys once again... something weird or interesting or bad always happens when I go.. when I left for All-East, there were a bunch of fights at school (like three in one day), when I went to HBOA, there was a bomb threat and it snowed, when I went to Carson-Newman, Betsy Taylor got in a car accident (yeah, this was last week) and had to get 22 stitches.. she's okay from what Mr. J told me though, and now, I'm going to All-State and I'm going to miss another holiday.. probably something else too, lol. It's pretty easy to carry all of my bags now, though! That trombone Mr. Featherston's letting me use is awesome, especially the gig bag; it helps a lot when you have a bunch of stuff to drag around, hehe. Anyway, I have to go to bed, and I will find more minute things to rant about as soon as All-State is over.. and I will also be getting a job! Hehe.. I'm sure you guys will be like,"Haha... he's going to look even more stoned in the morning!"... Speaking of... I fell off of Mr. Jackson's desk this morning.. it was funny. Argh... sleep time.

If any of you have journals you want me to post up here, I'd be glad to advertise for the small fee of... yeah, just send it to me. Dirtyvert@yahoo.com

3.1.04- Well... I'm back from HBOA. I had an amazing trip... I can't even describe how wonderful it was. Anyway, I'm sure all of you have heard by now.. I ended up with first chair trombone when I auditioned (and by the way, that does not mean that I am the best H.S. trombone in the U.S., I mean, I sit next to Erik and Deanna in Youth Symphony after all). I am proud of myself. I met some really influential people, too; one of which who started me on choir chamber music.. and now I'm hooked. I'm going to put an mp3 of "O Magnum Mysterium" on the site for all of you to hear and get latched on to :-). It is actually up right now, just go to mp3s. Well anyway, I have to get ready for school... back to reality for me :-(. I guess it's the sudden escapes that makes it all worthwhile, that whole reality thing. See you all in about 45 minutes!

2.22.04- Hey guys.. just got back from Monica Warwick's birthday party.. was a whole lot of fun. I'm glad everyone showed up.. Josh, you are awesome, lol. Anyway, I've got only 5 days left until I go to the Honor Band of America... a little scary... but I'm alright. Well, if any of you guys are wondering why your emotionally stable hero broke down on Thursday, it's because the night before I was told some bad news.. my dad's going overseas for two months pretty soon. But I'm okay now. Anyway, I'm pretty tired, so I'm going to hit the sack.. I'll see you all later! OH YEAH.. got jazz results back.. my predictions were correct.. I got 2nd trombone, como esta el YAY!!

P.S. I will update the page with some cool winter stuff and what not pretty soon :-).

2.18.04- Lessee... looked for the results on All-State Jazz online today... found out that someone has lead and someone has third. So I either didn't make it, got fourth chair, or got second chair. Hehe... I think I may have snagged second.. sweet. But I won't know for sure until Mr. Jackson tells me the results (see, they came in a week ago.. he's almost as bad a space cadet as I am). Anyway, I'm hoping for the best. Lol, I checked the placements for the past three years, and that same guy managed to get lead every year, even as a sophomore.. so I'm guessing he's one of those Memphis guys that practices three hours a day. Looks like I'm bumping my hours up, I've got Fridays and Sundays up to three (I put in four and a half last Friday), and I'm going to try my very hardest to get at least two in every day except Mondays. Schedules up, and I'm crackin' down... cause this badboy's going to kick some ass by the end of this year [/corny movie line]. P.S. Everyone please bug Mr. Jackson that I'm learning nothing in fourth period band and I'm not getting any chances to help anyone out.. I'd really like it if he'd let me practice more often, although I'm happy with one day a week (better than none like I had before).

2.11.04- Exactly one month after my last update.. I'm now officially ungrounded. Yay! So what did you guys miss? Tons of stuff.. which I most likely have forgotten. The most recent occurance- All-East. It was amazing. We played this one piece that was three movements long called "The Three Notes of Japan".. but the title was in French, so it was like "Les trois notes du Japon" or something like that.. it was extremely cool. We also played "An American Elegy" by Frank Ticheli. I cried hard while we were playing the song, haha. It's funny though.. I've begun to seriously not care what other people think of me. Normally, I'd just try to think of it as a normal song and not do something like that because people might think I was an "unmanly" person or something like that.. screw that. I guess we all gradually begin to find ourselves in high school, sooner or later. Sucks for the people that get caught up in all the goofy high school drama. But anyway, Mr. Featherston also brought in a trombone for me to play today.. and he's leaving it at the school, so I don't have to bring my horn back and forth between school and home.. not to mention I have a really awesome sound now! It's so much fun. Sarah and I are doing really well, we'll have been dating for three months on the fourteenth. Well, I'm off of here for now, but there will seriously be updates for a while now. Expect pictures and movies! See ya.

1.11.034- Sorry of the lack of updates.. again. I'll be updating the site regularly now.. hopefully. I plugged the internet back into my room after remembering that I had to send my homework to my teacher via e-mail.. so yeah. For those of you who haven't heard, I got 3rd Chair Blue Band at All-East.. so I will definitely be going to All-State. But it'll probably be for jazz anyway, since Don wants me to do All-State jazz. I moved up a chair from last year, and got what I thought was the best chair I could get for this year.. although I have some serious work to do on sightreading. I know that if I botched my sightreading as badly as I did, and still got the chair I did.. well I must have really kicked ass on the prepared stuff. I played the Ab and G scale 3 octaves each, and did an almost 4 octave chromatic scale from pedal F to double D (hehe, Shaun said double D). And I did well on my piece, too. Practiced about 4 hours today out of sheer boredom.. technically I've been practicing since 1:00 to now which is 7:30, but I've been sort of on and off between serious practicing and goofing off. I can't wait until All-East, and I'm very content with my placement. Here's all the others that made it-

Blue Band
Laurel Black- 1st Chair Percussion (All-State)
Chris McDonald- 7th Chair Trumpet (All-State)
Matt Clark- 13th Chair Trumpet (All-State, they took 13 trumpets this year instead of 6!!)

Red Band
Erika Henry- 1st Chair Clarinet

Green Band
Katie Woods- 5th Chair Horn

White Band
Gracie Streine- 12th Chair Flute
Michael Tucker- Tuba
Trey Dunn- Clarinet (any idea how these guys did? Post on tagboard to the right if you know so I can put it up)
Nick What's-His-Face (Shaun having brain fart)- 5th Alternate

Uh... yep. That's all that's going on with me. Thanks for all the support... not really, you guys don't support me. You all hate me. Oh yeah, I found out something really funny the other day! Erin Kimble and Christy Madison went to the same rec center as me! Lol, I knew them, but I didn't know I knew them. Hehe. Ok, that's all that's going on with me.. check for updates every day or two now.
