Northeastern University
The second camp I worked for last summer was situated on the Northeastern University campus. Northeastern University is located in the town of Boston, on the edge of the Fenway Park, also called the Back Bay Fens.

The camp activities took place in building 41, the Kerr Hall. The computer lab was on the second floor, and the staff were accomodated on the third and forth floor. As there were a few overnight campers (who actually lived at camp for a week), they were also accomodated on the third floor. Most of the campers, though, were commuter campers (who came in in the morning and went home in the evening). |
The university cafeteria, where both staff and campers had their meals, is located in building 48. It has a very rich assortment of cooked food - no junk food! - with completely different dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They range from a variety of Continental and European dishes (including stuffed cabbage!) to cold treats and culminate with appealing tasty desserts (cakes, creams, cookies, and icecream), everything on the principle that you only pay once and eat all you can.
Kerr Hall was built in the fifties as a designated dorm for girls. Things have been the same ever since. It also accomodates the Northeastern University conference center.

Kerr Hall is situated at 96 the Fenway, its entrance (see picture) facing the Fenway Park. It has a small kitchen to serve the conference center, a laundry room, and a TV lounge. Except for the camp staff and campers, the building was completely empty. The cleaning staff would quickly do their job in the morning. Except for the conference rooms on the second floor, the building is not air conditioned, which made a stale sulphur, or insecticide smell very persistent. |
